If Christianity brought down the *ROMAN EMPIRE* why couldmn't they wipe out Christianity?

Empires have a finite lifespan that cannot be affected by the rise of any cults within them. although I suspect that the rise of Christianity had more to do with the emperors trying to set up a monotheistic state religion to more easily control the people as their empire started to crumble.
